During our early years in Port Townsend, we homeschooled our sons Daniel and Ethan. Richard worked as the staff architect at Timbercraft Homes, and Kristin volunteered at the Food Coop. In 1997, we founded Richard Berg Architects, which operated out of the front part of our house. As we all spent our days at home, living, working, and learning, we came to dearly love and appreciate our convenient and beautiful neighborhood, with all of its nearby businesses, parks, beaches, library, entertainment, beloved corner store, and delectable meals and treats of all kinds. As the kids grew older, Kristin began working part- time downtown at Abracadabra, a short 6-block walk from the house. 2005 brought construction of a new office building next door to our house, and Richard Berg Architects moved into the new space and got a little bigger and busier. In 2010, Eric Kuzma joined the firm as an associate and the firm was renamed Terrapin Architecture. With the Secret Garden project, we are both excited about the opportunity to preserve and restore two homes that have been a part of our neighborhood for many years, and also about creating opportunities for new residents to share in the wonderful experience of living in Uptown Port Townsend. Malcolm DornI have been building in the Port Townsend area for 22 years. Before coming to Port Townsend, I had been a full-time farmer in rural California, doing carpentry on the side to supplement a farming income. I continued with the farming here, serving local restaurants and the Food Coop. If you’ve been around a while, you may recall my Port Townsend Produce stand in the first few years of Farmers’ Market. I’d love to return to farming someday. I first established licensing as a General Contractor in 1988, joining forces with Blue Heron Builder’s Coop. In my 11 years with the group, I built a number of homes and commercial buildings. I was also hired as project manger overseeing construction of the Quimper Unitarian Church and Education Hall. Going independent in 1999, I founded Wallyworks Enterprises Ltd., specializing in constructing small energy-efficient homes that complement Port Townsend’s diverse neighborhoods. We love to build community while enhancing our diverse small-town character. In the last few years, we have enjoyed building several RBA designs, including their new office building in 2006. The Secret Garden Cottages Development with the Bergs is a perfect fit for Wallyworks. Our mission is to promote a sustainable, walkable community while enhancing our existing neighborhoods. As I live just 3 blocks from Secret Garden, I have a vested interest in seeing our wonderful neighborhood get even better. I look forward to welcoming some new folks to Uptown! Charley KanieskiI have been a CPA since 1977. I have worked for a large Big Eight (formerly) Firm and a couple of regional firms. I have also owned my own retail hardware business with 21 employees. I understand what making the payroll means to the business owner. I started my Port Townsend accounting practice in 1990. As I worked with many small business owners in Port Townsend, it became clear to me that many of my clients wanted and needed general business advice as well as accounting services. I began to focus both my personal training and my practice on working with these owners on the success of their small businesses. I also added PFS (Personal Financial Specialist) and CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and CVA (Certified Valuation Analyst) credentials. When I studied for these certifications my focus was completely on helping small business owners with a broader range of services. Both Wallyworks and Richard Berg Architects have been my clients for many years, and I am pleased to be a part of the team working toward the success of the Secret Garden Cottages project. As a Business Guide, my mission is to help business owners reach financial security. This can either be through funding a lifestyle that works for them or raising the value of the business to sell for retirement, or funding a retirement plan via the business and retire. Each plan is custom for each business. |
