The Uptown NeighborhoodUptown Port Townsend began to develop in the 1860's and 1870's on the bluff above the bustling commercial district that had grown up along the waterfront. The town fathers and early successful merchants and sea captains bought land on the bluff and built houses for their families. Eventually, a small commercial district was established to serve the new neighborhood. Many of those early commercial buildings, grouped around the intersection of Tyler and Lawrence Streets are still in existence and still in use today. The Secret Garden Cottages are conveniently located two short blocks from Aldrich's Market (the center of the Uptown universe), five blocks from downtown (featuring the famous Rose Theater), and six blocks from the beautiful, 100-year-old Chetzemoka Park and the beach. |
